The Pixar Zoetrope
Looking through my files I stumbled upon this movie of the 3D Zoetrope from Pixar's exhibition at the NYC MoMA earlier this year, and I realized that it probably hasn't been posted anywhere. So here it is! It's a 4.2 MB mp4 movie, and of course it doesn't approximate in the least how cool this contraption looks in person. This is real 3D animation. There's plenty more information on the Zoetrope and the rest of the exhibit (which I believe is in London now) at the Luxo Blog.

Ahhh awesome. Thanks for posting this Victor. I have seen some videos of this on YouTube but the quality was very average. That is so very cool looking. I wish it was coming to Brisbane. Or I wish I could fly to Japan to see it on its visit there.

Hey - yeah i saw this at the Science museum, at first i walked itno the room where the was a big glass cabinet and this inside it, and at this point it was moving, and i thought - that's pretty cool, and carried on walking on. After i'd walken around the exhibition a bit, there was a massive buzz in the room about how amazing the spinny thing with strobe was, i had no idea what there were talking about, and just before i left the exhibition, i just went back to have another look glass cabinet - and boy was i in for a suprise! It was really really incredible. Thanks a lot for posting it Victor!

yey I saw the Ghibli version of it in the Studio Ghibli museum in mitaka (tokyo). It was so amazing I was sitting in front of it about a half an hour starring at it. Fantastic!
No NZ showing of the 20 years exhibition... *sad* We just aren't a big enough market to make it worth the while I gather.

Rini: I usually use a Canon PowerShot G3, and I do lots of adjustment in Photoshop. The closeup of the zoetrope was not taken by me.
I saw this at the exhibition in Japan. Man, it's soooo cool. I believe they got the idea from the zoetrope at the Ghibli Museum, which i saw only a few days previous. Good stuff!
Yeah seeing in person was amazing. Such a wonderful part of that show.

I think these comments could be old... but the Zoetrope is in Melbourne at the moment... A lot closer that 'Japan'. Not far from Brisban... It's the only place it'll be at in Australia... Will be on exhibition up until October.
I went and sore it in person... I was impressed! The Artscape is pretty cool, too... go check it out!
I've just seen the exhibit here in Melbourne. They seem to have added another layer to the zoetrope since your photo. Now there is a Jessie, twirling a lasso, between Buzz and the toy soldiers at the centre.
great post thanks! i saw it at the science museum a couple of years ago and loved it. iv been trying to explain it to people but finding it hard to tell them how good it was! btw iv only just found this website and i love it! so youll be seeing more of me on here from now on :D good work.
although the pixar piece is fascinating, it should be noted that since 2002 burning man artist peter hudson has made four 3d life-sized, interactive stroboscopic zoetropes, four years prior to pixars first entry
